Hadith of the week
Amir al-Mu'minin (a) said, "Do you not see that the boundaries of your cities have diminished, your populated areas have been conquered, your possessions have been snatched away and your cities and lands have been attacked. May Allāh have mercy on you, get up to fight your enemy and do not remain confined to the earth, otherwise you will face oppression and suffer ignominy and your fate will be the worst. The warrior should be wakeful because if he sleeps the enemy does not sleep; and that is an end to the matter."
(Nahj al-Balagha)

Grief & Depression Management In Islam
by Tahir Ridha Jaffer
Grief and depression are common experiences in the lives of most individuals in the world. While grief is somewhat easy to spot, with tearing eyes, sulky frowns and sad faces being a sure give-away that someone is unhappy about something, depression is more obscure. People usually keep their depression a secret, perhaps because they think it may be regarded a weakness of mind. However, depression can be an overwhelming burden, especially when it is recurrent. Recurrent depression is a cause of other common problems among the youth such as substance abuse. Of course, the most adverse sequela of depression is suicide, which has been named the second leading cause of death among adolescents. While there are numerous books on the subject of depression and grief, few, if any at all, have been written in English from the Islamic perspective. It is hoped that this work proves beneficial to Muslim readers who are suffering from grief or depression in their lives.
