Our opponents from Ahlus Sunnah are always criticising other groups of Muslims for their opinions on certain companions. They claim to love and follow all the companions of the Prophet (s) and disassociate from anyone who slanders or even crticises them. We have something interesting to present to you regarding the words of Ibn Taymiyyah.
We read the following in Minhaj al-Sunnah, vol 8, pg 573:
And this is not a calamity (referring to the Calamity of Thursday) for the pious who seek their guidance from the Quran. But it is a calamity for the one who had a disease in his heart. As was abrogation from what Allah has abrogated, and the Quran being brought down, and how the Muslims were beaten on the day of uhud, and other than that from the calamities of the world that are calamities for those who have a disease in their hearts.
Ibn Taymiyyah strongly voiced his opinion against the one who calls that day a calamity, going so far as claiming it a sign of nifaq (a disease in your heart is used to reference nifaq). So who is the first person who referred to this event as a calamity?
Let us see with the following narrations in Sahih al-Bukhari 114 and Sahih al-Bukhari 4432 and Sahih al-Bukhari 5669 and Sahih al-Bukhari 7366 and Sahih Muslim 1637c:
Ibn Abbas reported: When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was about to leave this world, there were persons (around him) in his house, 'Umar b. al-Kbattab being one of them. Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) said: Come, I may write for you a document; you would not go astray after that. Thereupon Umar said: Verily Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) is deeply afflicted with pain. You have the Qur'an with you. The Book of Allah is sufficient for us. Those who were present in the house differed. Some of them said: Bring him (the writing material) so that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) may write a document for you and you would never go astray after him And some among them said what 'Umar had (already) said. When they indulged in nonsense and began to dispute in the presence of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), he said: Get up (and go away) 'Ubaidullah said: Ibn Abbas used to say: There was Calamity, indeed a heavy Calamity (Raziya), that, due to their dispute and noise. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) could not write the document for them.
As we can all clearly see, the Sahih books of our opponents, which are Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim both narrate that Ibn Abbas is the first person to refer to the Calamity of Thursday as a ‘Calamity’. So according to Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Abbas is not from the people of piety who seek their guidance from the Quran, rather, he has a sickness in his heart. Shall we remind our viewers on the hukm of insulting the Companions according to the Ulema of Ahlus Sunnah?
