In the name of Allah, the Almighty, the Most Merciful and Compassionate, who has perfected all of His creation.
Fadak was a significant piece of land located near Khaybar, known for its richness and value. After the Muslims had attained success at Khaybar, the Jews signed a treaty with the Prophet (saw) and in exchange offered him a portion of this land. It remained as a valuable resource, and he would allow his family and the Bani Hashim to use to fulfil their needs.
The Prophet (saw) especially gifted this land to Fatima al-Zahraa (as) as a gift and so she had ownership over this land. She used its resources to support her tribe, as the descendants of Fatimah, such as Sayyids or Alawis, are prohibited from accepting sadaqa.
After Abu Bakr became the Khalifa, he argued that the land belonged to the Muslims and so the State had full right to take ownership of it. His reasoning for this was that the Prophet (saw) did not leave behind any inheritance based on a Hadith he heard from the Prophet (saw). He denied Fatima's claims that she received it as a gift, and so Fatima (as) was left without this important resource and the Bani Hashim were left to starve.
